November Lockdown Plans

Dear Parents,

As promised in the last email, here are the plans for the next 4 weeks.

Classes tomorrow and Wednesday as normal.

Let's do this guys!

Our Position

Dance studios have been named as one of the businesses that need to close so I am forced to take our classes online. It is not something I want to do, especially as we were slowly building numbers back up.

For those of you that have been doing 'blended' classes this will be an easy transition, as well as for those of you that were part of the school for the Summer Term.

I can't stress enough that continuing online is beneficial - especially for those in Pre Primary + above - so that your children don't fall behind on syllabus work/exam preparation.

In February 2020 we held a 3 day exam session for 80+ pupils. Those pupils then moved up into their new grades for a mere 3 - 4 weeks before the first lockdown from March 23rd.

They returned to in person classes in September and we are considering many of them for their next graded exam in February 2021; with them having learnt the majority of the work in 15 weeks of lessons online. We don't intend to let these 4 weeks scupper our ambition and will be working hard in all classes.

If your child isn't doing an exam class, keeping them active, in their routine, and with some semblance of normality has been proved to be a positive thing.

Miss Ellis covered my Performance classes the last Saturday before half term as I unfortunately contracted shingles. After classes she took the time to message me and say how impressed she was with the students' strength and technique since she last taught them in the early part of this year. Another plus.

Lastly, the teaching team do their very best to make online classes fun, engaging and appropriate for the space.

Our term is due to end on Saturday 5th December as we had 7 weeks before half term and 5 weeks remain. (This is with the exception of Tuesday Street classes and Thursday Tap + Modern now scheduled to finish the following week; Tuesday 8th and Thursday 10th Dec).

I have considered pausing classes now and continuing on later into December in person to make up for it. However, with plenty of rumours going round about the lockdown potentially being longer than 4 weeks, I don't want to pause classes now, only to be disappointed later when they still have to be online.

We may put on some additional classes in December if permitted to give us the chance to see our lovely students prior to the Christmas break.

However, for now, classes falling between Thursday 5th November and Wednesday 3rd December will all take place online.

Accessing classes

As before, links to gain access to classes will be posted on the 'online' page of the website. (As you read this they may not be up quite yet but will be by Thursday I promise!)

For the safeguarding of your children, this page is password protected.

The password is:

1*CLiff0rd

Classes are listed by day and time so please click on the relevant one and you will be taken to the waiting room. Once the teacher is ready they will admit you.

The most common problems and solutions we have come across are:

1. The password isn't working!

Please write the above password somewhere in your phone/near your device as it is correct. The o of Clifford is a zero and the l of Clifford is capitalised.

2. I don't know what class to click on!

Please ask your child what class they do or check your invoice.

3. I can't get into the meeting!

The teacher may be running late or dealing with something so please be patient if they haven't started the meeting or let you in. Next please update your zoom. If those don't work please call the studio number. Do not email as it may not be seen in time.

Please then calmly describe the problem and the front desk person will do their best to help.

Please don't call or text the teacher if you have their personal number as they will be teaching and unable to help.

Getting the most out of online classes

From our experience in the Summer Term; here are our top tips:

 1. Put dance uniform on and do hair as you would for an in person class.

This will get your child in the zone for dance and demarcate it from any other online activity you may also be doing.

2. Get your device ready and charged up 5/10 minutes ahead of class, then test the camera view.

This will avoid wasting time as the teacher asks to be able to see body/feet etc

3. Prepare a space.

I know it may be a pain and there may not be much of it but even a small square (they are used to those!) dedicated for their dance class will help.

4. Stay in the room with any under 7s to ensure they remain focussed.

They love you watching them if you have the time and there's very little we can do when a 3 year old wanders off to sit on the sofa.

5. Make sure your child has all the kit ready that they need for that class.

For example shakers for JUMP, therabands for BBCon, blocks and mats for Performance classes. Your children know!

Tap Boards:

Whilst it's fine to be practising the ankle movements and not necessarily the sounds, if you want to invest in, or make a tap board please do. The one I have is from Harlequin - a company that make dance floors too - and is linked below. Or you can make one by following the YouTube tutorial.
